Silver Star Provincial Park is 22 km north east of Vernon BC. The Park is home to the Silver Star Resort and the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. At Sovereign Lake you'll find over 50 km of Cross Country Ski Trails and 14 km of snowshoe trails. In this video we take you on a 6.5 km loop to the Black Prince Cabin and back.

This 3 km hike begins at Red Gate, goes down to Jade Bay, up to the Twin Bays Parking Lot, on to Grassland Trail, then Corral Trail back to Red Gate

On this hike I'll show a 6 km loop through Bear Valley on the High Rim Trail and back on Gingerly, to a bench where we stopped for a snack and the views before returning along Cosens Bay Trail. Slight error with my Garmin GPS device. I turned it on in the parking lot and accidentally turned it off a few minutes later. I didn't notice for 12 minutes. The straight line shown at the beginning of the trip is the result. Luckily, Adventure Girl supplied me with the correct accumulated distance.

Vernon is such a beautiful place. Starting where Bella Vista, 30th Ave and 41st St meet, run west, uphill, for 5 km, drop down to Tronson and run east, to Kin Beach where in the summer the washrooms are open, continue on Tronson past the airport until it becomes Okanagan Landing/25th Ave, past restaurants (bathrooms), to 41st St. then north to close the loop. Stretch it out!
Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park has a number of great hiking and biking trails. In the summer I love to swim at Twin Bays. There's also a dedicated doggy beach, large parking lots at Twin Bay and Cosens Bay and about a dozen spaces at Red Gate. There are Pit toilets at the Twin Bays parking lot, Jade Bay, Cosens Bay and the Cosens Bay Parking lot. Mountain Biking is permitted in most, but not all, areas.

I visited Marshall Field when it was -5 C outdoors and, unsurprisingly, the only people around were walking their dogs. So let me start off by saying, the path along Vernon Creek is a great and popular place for walking your dog and meeting others doing the same. The newest addition to the area is the 12 Pickle Ball courts which opened August 2018. There are four tennis courts and very impressive baseball diamond with facilities for players and fans alike. The Vernon Toyota Indoor Sports Centre is the largest structure in the Field but the largest area is dedicated to multiple soccer fields. The west end of Marshall Fields is a block from Okanagan Lake, Lakeshore Drive, where the City of Vernon is undertaking to greatly improve the waterside facilities. I'll do another video about that once the new parks are ready for the public. In this video I was testing having an external mic and carrying an external audio recorder because, in my first video, the wind noise made my voice almost inaudible at times. Welcome to the Activernon blog and vlog! I'm excited about all the ways adults can keep active in Vernon BC. I'm an outdoor guy who wants to share and encourage others to keep active, fit and healthy. I decided to capture some of the things I do on video and also wanted to brag a little about how exercise friendly the Greater Vernon area is. First though, I'm going to produce a few videos to learn how to use my camera while I'm on bicycle to see if I can keep a steady shot and record my voice without the noise of the wind. Here's my first try! |
