What winter walking article would be complete without a word about dressing in thin layers? If you aren’t familiar with the concept, the idea is to choose multiple thin layers you can remove as you warm up, or while you are sitting at a local café. When you are ready to go again, reapply the layers to maximize your comfort.
If you decide on a longer walk or hike, take water with you. Walking in the winter requires water as well. If you have a regular treat you bring on your summer hikes, check to see if they are still enjoyable when frozen! Also note, keep your phone in a warm pocket to aid battery life span. Most cell phones aren’t Canadian Tough! Depending where you are hiking, you may not have cell service so be sure to tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
